We should have seen the writing on the wall ten years ago and got out then.

Trumps agreement with the Taliban was to withdraw troops by May, 2021. Biden actually left them there longer.
That was a big part of the fiasco; he left them there too long-- mistakenly believing he had more time than he had to get everyone out safely.

What happens next? No one really knows. Thousands of Americans now are at the mercy of the taliban.

Hopefully the taliban will allow them all to leave without harming them.

Seemingly biden had no plan other than to refuse to go along with Trump's deal with the taliban.

This catastrophe lies solely on biden's shoulders...he went against the advise he was given.

Because the Taliban broke the terms of the agreement by 4500 attacks on Afghan forces and refusing talks with the Afghan government. The Taliban agreed to let US forces leave Afghanistan and for that they got a major reduction in US troops and the return of 1,000 Taliban fighters.

Bush started the crap in Afghanistan 20 years ago. Our troops have been there way too long.
We fulfilled the original mission about 10 years ago but we creating new missions, to provide a democratic government, new schools, better infrastructure, equal rights for women, and a well trained and equipped military. The problem was these were our plans based on our perspective, not the Afgan perspective. Thus when America leaves we will leave a bit of our culture there but for the most part it will return to the Afgan ways and culture that has survived through a thousands years of occupation and subjugation.

Yes, that was W's big mistake; attempting to make Afghanistan into something it could not be.

'W'was not known as a moron for no reason.

Now the idiot apparantly fell in love with Michelle and he has become the darling of the democratic party.

W was big on nation building and Obama bought into also. The big problem with nation building is America is not like Afghanistan in any way. We have vast resources, two oceans separating us and our enemies, secularism that successfully coexists with religion, and a history of national stability. Afghanistan has none of these. There is no amber waves of grain, or fruited plains. The history of Afghanistan is one of 1500 years of war, subjugation, and religious strife. Today, the country consists of numerous ethnolinguistic groups: Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, Aimaq, Turkmen, Baloch, Pashai, Nuristani, Gujjar, Arab, Brahui, Qizilbash, Pamiri, Kyrgyz, and Sadat which have been held together as a nation at the point of gun. Since the country was formed in the early 1700's there have been 2 civil wars and 4 invasion's by Arab conquers and 4 wars in 20-21st century. This does no include uncountable numbers of violent tribal conflicts. The idea that a democratic republic could be successful in this environment is ludicrous.
