If Obama is serious about closing Guantanamo, why doesn't he do it? Or at least start releasing the prisoners he thinks are being wrongly held.

What is stopping him? Barack Executive Order Obama is not the kind of guy to let lack of congressional cooperation stand in the way ... if he actually wants to do something.

Or is he indeed working toward that goal? If so, what has he done so far?

Hopefully one of Obama's many supporters will come through with some more information on this.

After he gets home from his golf game and has a bite to eat he goes down to the WH basement to paint the "For Sale" signs.

Give him some time..........he's a busy boy.

He did issue an executive order. Congress passed legislation voiding that order.

Good article. Lots of interesting options. Do you think Obama will do any of them? Or is it just more talk?

So, now you want Obama to overstep Congress (again) and do it all by himself? And if he did, you guys would applaud the move, right?

Overstep Congress? He would have to overstep Congress to do any action with regard to Gitmo?

I won't applaud much about this president.

But I would like to see if this is all talk.

MarcATL gave him credit for being sincere about this recent talk -- more than sincere -- actually planning to do something -- but Marc seemed unable to address what it was that gave him confidence in Obama's sincerity.

Do you believe Obama is sincere about this? Or is it just talk? Just something else which he can try to get credit for having good intentions about but there was nothing he could do because the big mean Republicans tied his hands.

Try? Yeah.

But nothing is probably going to happen until after 2014.

And depending on the configuration of congress..there maybe nothing done.

Why. What does Congress have to do with this? That article suggested things Obama could do without congressional approval.

You're sounding like you also think Obama is all talk on this.

When he has something to gain politically, he hasn't let Congress stand in his way. He CLAIMS that he's doing it because it's the right thing but he has looked as if he was pandering for votes. You're suggesting that right now, with things he could do, and an avowed belief that it would be the right thing to act, he may not act.

I guess you dont understand executive orders, Congress or the Supremes can over rule them and rarely do they ever. Obama signed an executive order and got shot down. Why would he try again?

#11- BS- he always follows the law- Pubs mindlessly block and fear monger everything they can, dupe. And then complain he's no leader. Prepare to get hung out to dry in 2014, dupes.

and I didnt know about this thanks swallow

The administration could get around the restriction by issuing a national security waiver through the Pentagon, something it hasn't done so far.

Which executive order are you saying he was shot down on?

Obama would supposedly try again because he has said he would try again on matters other than Gitmo. He has scolded Congress and set his staff on the task of making lists of things he could do to move portions of his agenda without the help of Congress.

Will he or won't he put his actions where his mouth is with regard to Gitmo?

In 2009 who ran the House and the Senate? Who blocked his initiative exactly?

On May 20, 2009, the United States Senate passed an amendment to the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009 (H.R. 2346) by a 90-6 vote to block funds needed for the transfer or release of prisoners held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

In November 2009, President Obama admitted that the "specific deadline" he had set for closure of the Guantánamo Bay camp would be "missed."

And at the same link at wiki I found this. Wouldn't that legislation be Democrat as well?

On January 7, 2011, President Obama signed the 2011 Defense Authorization Bill which contains provisions that place restrictions on the transfer of Guantánamo prisoners to the mainland or to other foreign countries, thus impeding the closure of the detention facility.

He strongly objected to the clauses and stated that he would work with Congress to oppose the measures
