Folks, there are some questions
Where there really are no answers
Like studying a pin head
For a count of angel dancers

The sum of dancing angels
Like so much useless chatter
Is spoken as a metaphor
For things of no great matter

Email me that question
And I’ll write’ “return to sender”
Likewise, please don’t ask me
If an angel has a gender

That’s just as if you asked me
If I think that saints eat cereal
Such inquiries lack merit
In the realms that are ethereal

But here on terra firma
Our home of last resort
There are some disputations
That are brimming with import

For simple, basic questions
In great declining nations
When posed in public settings
Present vast complications

And people whose ambition
Requires they be nice
Answer with ten paragraphs
When one word should suffice

Now, some say prudent jurists
Shouldn’t telegraph positions
And it really doesn’t matter
If they won’t give definitions

They point accusing fingers
At grandstanding Senate frippery
Ignoring recent evidence
That slopes are really slippery

So, robbers are rewarded
And murderers acquitted
Because if nothing matters
Everything’s permitted
