People who opposed the U.S. keeping troops in Iraq indefinitely like to taunt the other side with "How long should we have stayed there? We stayed TEN YEARS'
What is the big deal about 10 years?
We have kept more than 30,000 U.S. soldiers in South Korea for SIXTY ONE years (and counting). And those years have been far, far from easy going. For the first 35 years after the armistice, South Korea was racked by coups, coup attempts, military governance, and brutal oppression.
Hundreds of American soldiers were killed in North Korean raids (especially in the 60s).
You keep soldiers in an area for as along as you have interests to protect. The U.S. clearly has interests in that region of the world (Middle East).
