When Adding New States Helped Republicans

The number of states in the union has been fixed at 50 for so long, few Americans realize that throughout most of our history, the addition of new states from time to time was a normal part of political life. New states were supposed to join the union when they reached a certain population, but in the late 19th century, population mattered a great deal less than partisanship. While McConnell is right to suspect that admitting Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia now would shift the balance in Congress toward the Democrats, the Republican Party has historically taken far more effective advantage of the addition of new states.

Doesn't matter who it helps. The Constitution permits it, taxation without representation demands it, and Republicans aren't entitled to anything. Not legislative control, not judicial control, not the presidency.
Why not just request a bigger welfare check and another trespasser lover?

The so-called Democrat Party, is counting its chickens before they hatch. Puerto Rico will not necessarily jump on board to becoming a state. Statehood has been repeatedly put on the ballot in Puerto Rico before......and each time, soundly rejected. The reason: Democrat run Puerto Ricans don't mind paying their local taxes, but haven't wanted federal income tax added in. They know that if they become a state, they'll be hit with more taxes. So, it's more likely that they will reject the offer for statehood.

As for D.C. then return it back to Maryland and Virginia and as for P.R. they are a territory like Guam and shouldn’t be made a State...

I would ask Mexico to become a State before P.R.!

P.R. Voted to join the Union in 2020 and the vote percentage was 52% in favor versus 47% against, so let me be clear you are incorrect about P.R. Rejecting Statehood...

If successful in this scam, the D's will rue the day.

The Republicans will take over and admit states that will support their cause. Will you say the same when the State of Southern North Dakota and Eastern Oklahoma seek admittance into the union?

Actually the eastern parts of Washington and Oregon as well as upstate NY, and Central California are much better candidates for a split.
But they would be Republican.

The problem is the Democrat-controlled states are in financial straights and need Republican state moneys to survive.
That does not appear to be true.

According to this analysis by Money Geek, New Mexico receives the most federal funding (probably because of how many military bases are there), but the rest of the top 10 are conservative states. The bottom 10 is split 50-50, with Delaware (blue) received a grand total of zero.

PFFFFFTTTT!

The Democrat Party is an illegitimate party and needs to be disbanded. They created the KKK, BLM, Antifa and imprisoned AMERICAN CITIZENS during WWII

They can become part of Maryland.

P.R. won't do it. They've turned it down repeatedly.

taxation without representation demands it
If so, then i guess they should kick out all the residents of DC.
The Constitution created DC. You cant just make it a state.
Good luck with an amendment, bedwetter.
The Const isn't really an impediment because they could just make the District smaller. But it'd still be a really stupid idea of the inhabitants of DC because the feds already fund mass transit, cops, roads, educ, etc. They'd lose stuff.

But the gop fainting over adding states for political advantage is hypocrisy.

Your last statement is very true.

I don't want D.C. to be a state for one reason and one primary reason.

Also, what if it does happen ?

What if Utah then wants to be broken into four states (All of which would have GOP senators) ? Then New York does the same thing ?

Then Nebraska.

Then Oregon ?

What does that look like ?

The Virginia part of DC was returned to Virginia in the 1840s. The rest can only be returned to Maryland if Maryland agrees to it, which to the best of my knowledge they don't want to do. That's their right as a State.

Every State except the original thirteen and Texas was a territory before it became a State. There's no reason why Puerto Rico (and theoretically Guam and whoever else) can't also become a State if they meet the requirements and get the votes.

We had our chance with Mexico too, after we annihilated them in the Mexican War, and decided against it. Personally, I think it was the right choice.

PR and Guam both have to request to become states the congress can not make them states with out that request from the people of those areas. As for DC it is unconstitutional and requires an amendment.
