As Imperialism is defined as "A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force", then both countries are imperialist, including the US. Not all of Ukraine's military actions are defensive in nature, some are outright attacks on Russia. And America's policy of funding the Ukraine war could also be construed as imperialism against Russia.
