“When he builds hotels, he buys the steel and aluminum, not from Pennsylvania, not from other places in the United States, but he buys steel and aluminum from China.”
Tim Kaine was in Pittsburgh to tell voters it’s Hillary Clinton, not Donald J. Trump , that has local interest most at heart.

A friend of mine who works/worked for a steel company near/in Pittsburgh:

"There is a ton of irony in this statement. First of all, American companies do not make structural steel anymore. The steel for every major building project is coming from overseas. Look at the new stadium that the Minnesota Vikings just built, all of the steel came from overseas.
This is scary, because we rely on foreign steel to defend our nation. We won WW2 because of our steel making capacity, and the story is much different today.
Now why is all the steel coming from overseas? Because it is cheaper.
Why is it cheaper? Because American companies spend billions to meet the ever increasing environmental standards that the democrats keep imposing, when in china they have no environmental controls at all and freely pollute the environment. Air quality in the vicinity of steel mills in the United States is the best it has ever been, huge improvements have been made, but Hillary still says she is going to shut down the coal industry, which in turn shuts down the steel industry.
So this statement saying that Trump buys steel from overseas is ridiculous, when the democrats are trying to make it so nobody has a choice but to buy Chinese steel.
So what would that do to the economy of PA? There are thousands of steel jobs here, and for every steel job, there are 10 other jobs that support the steel industry directly. It is complete lunacy to say that a Hillary presidency will help the steel industry or the PA economy."

It´s the doom loop of globalism. But once local industries have been reestablished, national purchase power will rise again, rendering the short-term benefits for western companies laughable as they are being replaced by foreign competition in the long-term.

Because they are cheap and look at their profits. Trump does not buy American steel because its better and more expensive.

Massive downturn? You got to be kidding me.

Industrial production for the year dropped 1.1 percent. And I'll bet the vast majority of that is petroleum related. If coal production is down, it's only because nat gas production is up. Nat gas will put the coal industry in its grave. That you can take to the bank.

Read properly. The -1.1 % only apply for August.

Who are you talking to?

Western PA is hurting but with all the new wind turbines I see, you'd think people around here would have jobs in energy and whatnot. There are no decent jobs around here.

Trump is an ecologist and wants open pit iron and copper ore mines in China to make their drinking water poisonous.

Their water probably already is poisonous. After all, they don't have any environmental standards to adhere to, now do they?
