If Clinton had gotten 1.5% more in each state Clinton would have won. She was a pathetically weak candidate. Most of those counties are thinly populated.

If Trump would have gotten 1.5% more in each state he would have still beat Clinton by the same margin.

You don't have to win those counties. Looking at the elections in Virginia, New Jersey and Alabama as well as some special elections, a trend has developed. Democrats are doing better than Clinton did among suburban voters and women. Independents strongly disapprove of Trump.
