How are these people able to get away with this?? Why is the state returning land that it rightfully took from some people who really didn't matter anyway? That is a good story. That family was screwed back in 1924 and the movers and shakers used eminent domain to do it, under the guise constructing a community project, that never took place and the land was not returned. Eminent domain has been used time and time again to screw people out of their property for political purpose or to benefit some other private entity's greed, malice or ambitions. It is high time they gave that land back.

So now you will have an island of privately owned beach that someone will build a multi-billion dollar hotel on. If this continues, Southern California will look like Honolulu with the beaches lined with high rise hotels and little or no access for normal citizens. Now, almost all the beaches in So Cal are publicly owned and in places where the beachfront property is privately owned public access is mandated. The rich beachfront property owners fought that tooth and nail and only when the coastal commission was formed was public access insured. The Coastal Commission is hated by the rich since it's not elected and can't be influenced by their money.

No, the City must pay the current owners the fair market value, and then return the land to the rightful owners.

In this case..the only reason it was Eminent domain-ed was to keep those uppity black folks from enjoying the beach. The property was not developed and is being rightfully returned to the heirs.

What I don't understand is why the land is not being SOLD back to the descendants? Offering to sell the land back, $75 millions worth, for only a quarter million is a very good deal. The irony is that now having given the land back, the family is apt to eventually sell it again anyway, to some rich, white interest.

I note that you don't address why the land was taken in the first place..that .they did not want to sell it to the Govt.--who were being pressured by the white landowners to put the blacks in their place..that place not being enjoying the beachfront they owned--in full view of those full of hate. This story also does not enumerate the KKK assaults and vandalism.
