Drug lord 'Chapo' Guzman's lawyers split on extradition case
May 28,`16 -- Jailed drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's fight to stave off extradition to the United States has led to a schism among some of the people he's counting on most: his own lawyers.
After two of Guzman's attorneys filed an appeal against the extradition request, a third lawyer quickly disavowed it on Saturday. Attorney Jose Refugio Rodriguez told The Associated Press that the move was not authorized by Guzman and his client will not sign off on the appeal, meaning the courts would not act on it. "This hurts Joaquin Guzman because it hinders our defense," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez added that the lawyers who filed it, Juan Pablo Badillo and Jose Luis Gonzalez Mesa, are not part of the team working on the extradition case. That team is still considering the government's arguments and plans an appeal in the coming weeks that "El Chapo" will approve. "We have a strategy with Joaquin and we are planning it," Rodriguez said. He suggested that Badillo and Gonzalez may have been motivated by "a desire for notoriety." Gonzalez did not immediately return a voice message seeking comment, and the AP was unable to reach Badillo.

Mexican courts recently approved two U.S. requests for Guzman's extradition and formally sent notification to the Foreign Relations Department. However his lawyers have 30 days to appeal and the case could go all the way to the Supreme Court, meaning it could be months before a final decision is reached. The convicted Sinaloa cartel boss is wanted in seven U.S. jurisdictions on charges that include murder, conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine and marijuana, money-laundering and arms possession.

Guzman is currently in a federal prison on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez, which borders El Paso, Texas. Authorities suddenly transferred him there in recent weeks from the Altiplano lockup near Mexico City where he was being held before, citing work being done to improve security at the facility. "El Chapo" broke out of a Mexican prison in 2001 and spent more than a decade on the run, becoming one of the world's most wanted outlaws before he was recaptured in 2014. Last year he escaped again through a mile-long (1.5-kilometer) tunnel dug to the shower of his cell at Altiplano. Mexican federal agents caught him in January in the city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, the state from which his drug gang took its name.

It's probably the best thing that Cl Chapo's defense could come up with. The guy will have clean clothes and good food and all the amenities the U.S. federal government has to offer instead of a rat infested hovel in Mexico Didn't you ever watch the reality show "locked up abroad"? It ain't about Trump, it's about Barry Hussein and the Hollywood elite. Next thing you know El Chapo might be starring in a movie with Danny Trejo.

'El Chapo' extradition suspended over fears of U.S. death penalty
June 29, 2016 -- A Mexican judge suspended the U.S. extradition process for drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman over fears he may be put to death.
The judge suspended extradition requests to California and Texas on Tuesday in favor of Guzman after the drug kingpin's defense team filed two injunctions on Monday. Although the United States in May guaranteed Guzman would not face the death penalty, the judge cited a Mexican law in his ruling stating that a defendant should not be extradited if there are risks to his "physical integrity." In the injunctions filed, Guzman's defense argued he could still be put to death in the United States. Guzman's appeals against extradition could take one to three years to conclude. Mexico's Foreign Ministry in May approved the United States' request for extradition.

Guzman's defense has said it is prepared to take his appeals against extradition to Mexico's Supreme Court. Guzman's Sinaloa Cartel is credited with dominating the illegal drug market in nearly the entire United States. "El Chapo" -- meaning "The Short One" or "shorty" -- so dubbed because of his 5-foot-6-inch frame, was detained in Guatemala in 1993 and extradited to Mexico to face murder and drug-trafficking charges.

He escaped from prison in 2001 by hiding in a laundry cart after bribing prison guards, and was re-captured in February 2014. He was captured in the city of Los Mochis in his home state of Sinaloa on Jan. 8 after escaping again, this time from Mexico's Altiplano Federal Prison on July 11.

Much ado about nothing. Another drug lord took his place, and now the taxpayers in this country have to pay el chapo's upkeep for life.

No, El Chapo has not escaped from prison a third time
Fri, 08 Jul 2016 - But why are so many people on Twitter saying he has?
It would have been a great story, except that it wasn't true. Another escape for El Chapo, Mexico's most famous drug lord, would have made it a hat trick. He has already given two maximum security prisons the slip. And on Friday his name trended worldwide, with hundreds of thousands of people sharing gifs, memes and jokes about his tricksy ways and supposed third escape. But no reputable media organisation was reporting that he had got out.

The story wasn't on the front pages of any of Mexico's main newspapers and none of the news agencies were reporting it. El Chapo is still behind bars in Mexico, his extradition to the US halted for now. So why has his name been trending? Spoof stories is why. Several different websites published stories saying El Chapo had escaped again. One of the websites has since apologised, but others have not. And people just kept sharing and sharing and sharing.

Sometimes people don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. It wasn't the first time that unsubstantiated rumours of El Chapo's escape circled the internet. But at least some people do check their sources. Amen, Boogie Bousins: here's to finding out the full story. And in that vein, let me tell you more about El Chapo Guzman.

Who is he and why is he in jail?

Mexico hopes to extradite Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman in early 2017
Oct. 14, 2016 -- Mexico's National Security Commissioner Renato Sales on Friday said authorities are aiming to extradite drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the United States in early 2017.
When asked about the process of extradition on the television show Despierta on Televisa Mexican, Sales said Mexican authorities hope it will take place "in January or February next year." He added that Guzman does not operate his drug empire from behind bars. Sales also said Guzman's Sinaloa Cartel is being investigated for an ambush that occurred in late September in Mexico's Culiacán state, in which five soldiers died. Guzman's sons are accused of carrying out the attack.

One of Guzman's lawyers, José Refugio Rodríguez Nuñez, also spoke to Televisa on Friday. He said Guzman's extradition to the United States would not happen anytime soon. Guzman's Sinaloa Cartel is credited with dominating the illegal drug market in nearly the entire United States. "El Chapo" -- meaning "The Short One" or "shorty" -- so dubbed because of his 5-foot-6-inch frame, was detained in Guatemala in 1993 and then extradited to Mexico to face murder and drug trafficking charges.

He escaped from prison in 2001 by hiding in a laundry cart after bribing prison guards, and was re-captured in February 2014. He was captured a second time in the city of Los Mochis in his home state of Sinaloa on Jan. 8 after escaping from Mexico's Altiplano Federal Prison on July 11, 2015. Rodríguez Nuñez has repeatedly asserted Guzman has been treated poorly by prison authorities -- likening Guzman's imprisonment to a human rights violation.
