$620 Bil in tax hikes, only $15 bil in spending cuts

Obama and the Dems own the economy

Totally

100%

No more Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooshhhhhhhh!! Wahh Boooshhhh

It wasn't a compromise between Democrats ... the Republicans made it impalpable for the middle class, as usual.

Republicans against Payroll Withholding Tax extension.

Typical moonbat whinging. As you favor the Entitlement State, how on earth is it supposed to be funded? Payroll taxes are the Fair Share for those who expect to collect benefits some day.

Oh yeah, that'll fix the deficit alright. Obama is saying the next battle over the debt ceiling has to have more tax increases, be interesting to see how that goes. I'm thinking after this deal the GOP will have a lot of support for more spending cuts, but not so much for the Dems and their higher taxes. Maybe they'll do some reform of the tax code, which would be a good thing IMHO. I'd like to see 'em do something about business taxes, which are currently the highest in the world.

As they are raising taxes on the merely affluent, $450K for couples - $400K for singles (one cannot help but wondering why married people are taxed so much more highly than singles), with phase out of deductions at $250K, the next step is massive increases on the middle and lower middle class.

The couple making 450 should get a divorce and become common law and each declare 225 :D

I suspect that some people will actually do that. It really is horribly discriminating.

that is not the reason for all taxes - or only working people should be held responsible without deductions ...

It is for Social Security and Medicare Taxes, bub. They are considered social insurance programs, and are funded with payroll taxes. All working people (EVEN THE RICH!), pay payroll taxes.

While this bill is essentially a democrat victory, it does improve the repub's position for the coming debt ceiling fight; the tax hike that was the central issue for the last couple of years has been ameliorated with almost no spending cuts. I would think it should be an easy sell for the repubs to shift the national focus on the out of control spending. I'll be very disappointed if real entitlement reform doesn't happen. And I'd also say this: if something significant is done on entitlement reform to make those programs more sustainable AND they also do some tax code reform, then Obama's presidency would be greatly enhanced from a historical perspective. But if they continue the small ball kick the can down the road, last minute BS and these things remain undone, then Obama's standing should be diminished quite a bit.

What "FREE stuff" are you talking about? Social Security and Medicare? Because those are the primary targets of the GOP -- while relatively little attention is paid to the most serious spending problem of all, the obscenely and unnecessarily bloated military aggression ("defense") budget.

America's economic problem is not the fault of its social programs but rather the fault of the Military Industrial Complex which Dwight Eisenhower warned us about when leaving Office. It's lobbyists have a stranglehold on our almost totally corrupted Congress which routinely rubber-stamps even the most plainly unnecessary and wasteful demands of this gluttonous monster bureaucracy.

Eugene Robinson - Trimming a bloated defense budget

It is hard.. very hard. I'm a single mom with no support. I take care of my daughter and myself on my own.. I'm always saving my change because I know it's literally food for my daughter those last two days before I get paid and that means I go without, which is no big deal.. I can handle it.

Go get some food stamps. If bamie can peddle them down in Mexico you're surely entitled to have some.

I can't do it Willow.. I go over to my dad's to eat on Sundays and if I have to, I go to him for something if I am really hungry.. I wasn't brought up to sponge off of the government. I'm applying for a 2nd job now.. I think I may have one. Let's hope!

It's hard living under this dismal economy, and I commend those who fight their way through it no matter how easy or tempting it may be to just allow the government to take care of you. It speaks to your character and your daughter will see a hard working overcomer. Families need to be there for each other, thats what people who are also struggling needs to hear. I wish you luck on your second job, hoping things will turn around for you where all that sacrifice and hard work really bears fruit in your life.

When was the last time a Federal BUDGET has been passed in the Senate? When did Obama seek to push for a Congressional Budget plan, instead of looking for ways to waste even more taxpayer dollars to appease his cronies? Where's all this transparency and the change to not cater to lobbyists? Seems this President is just a smooth car salesman, with an administration that has grown accustomed to lying to the American people.

2012 Social Security tax rate and maximum taxable earnings

think again, Maximum Taxable Earnings For 2012, the maximum taxable earnings amount for Social Security (OASDI) taxes is $110,100.

its a free ride for the hard pressed ... paid for by working Americans.

no room for change there, just ask Paul Ryan.

I'm not sure exactly what point you are trying to make.

People who earn over $110k also pay much higher income tax rates on top of their payroll tax burden - so they aren't getting off easy.

The hard pressed who have paid into SS and Medicare were sold the same bill of goods that those who are currently paying to taxes: that both programs are insurance.

If you are implying that its a ponzi scheme, I agree. Individuals would be far better off keeping their SS and Medicare dollars in private investment accounts over which they have control. That's what they do in Chile, and it has worked out much better than our Fake Lockbox System.

the 110K has no payroll burden - that is exclusive for hard working Americans with no itemized deductions, anotherwords they pay the tax for the benefits you feel disposed to limiting but limit the tax payable at 110K for the truly hard pressed and above.

I used to believe that too...until I found out that most major corporations pay zero to very little in taxs...in 2010 the top 10 richest corporations paid ZERO in Federal taxs because of loopholes and off shore crap and shennanigans. They get no more tears from me.
I can say my tax rate is 90% but who cares I dont pay anything its all bs...if theres a change in the tax code it should be to end all loopholes and subsidies
That's baloney. Corporation pay taxes on every move they make. Besides payroll taxes they are taxed every year for all their equipment their property, not only that but they have to pay someone or many someone's depending on their size, to figure out and keep track of all the taxes. And don't say they just raise the price of their product because that's baloney also. They have to compete by keeping their prices as low as possible.

The person earning over $110K pays full Social Security and Medicare on the first $110K of income. Medicare is also paid on any income above $110K. That person also pays much higher income taxes, which are a Payroll Burden.

Quit being so jealous of those who earn more than you - envy is a sad way to live.

All Barack Obama is capable of is "small ball". Today, on New Year's Day, I find no pleasure in the prospect of YEARS to come enduring his pathetic excuse for leadership. His big "win", should the House actually approve it, pays the interest on our debt for a year and a half. That is, if he had the money in hand today rather than stretched out over a decade... and if it actually panned out to be the amount forecasted, which it seldom does. Of course, there's no reduction in spending because these socialist assholes will ALWAYS use our taxpayer money to forward their own political careers rather than to do the JOB they were elected to do.

The shame of it all... is that no one is surprised.

Congress is the same as it's always been. It's simply bereft of leadership the last four years, and unfortunately there's still another four of the same coming. There will be no responsible legislation to control spending. That requires responsible leadership... and we have none in Barack Obama.

Get rid of the corporate income tax altogether and you'll see an unprecedented economic boom in this country.

DTMB certainly has a case study or two to back that up. No need to post them. We trust you.
