There are many reasons for the increase in disability claims, most notably the recession, an aging population, advances in medical technology and a decade of war.
The recession: The economic downturn in 2008 and early 2009 is thought to be the major reason for the jump in disability payments to people who were formerly working.
"With every recession, we see a rise in the number of applicants," said Andrew Houtenville, an economics professor at the University of New Hampshire's Institute on Disability. "People are looking for options in terms of income support."
Disability claims skyrocket: Here's why
Wow, you got it exactly right.
Aging Baby Boomers coincide with a bad economy and is probably causally linked. Baby Boomers planning and saving for retirement are obviously a drag on the economy.
I herniated my T7-T8 disc in August of 2013. My doctor then put me on disability.
I had a car accident in 2014, and that herniated my L4-L5 disc, and later in May of 2016 my doctor inexplicably took me off disability even though my condition was WORSE than when he put me on disability, not better.
This idea that people are faking back injuries more in the recession due to greed is horseshit. People have always dont that, but the aging population is the primary cause for the rising number of disability claims, not fakery.
BTW, my insurance denied my medical claim based on a plainly incompetent IME report. These insurance companies are trying to stay in business by hosing their paying customers at every opportunity.
