Even police chief can't believe it

POST FALLS, Idaho (AP) - An Idaho prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for a 9-year-old boy who failed to show up in court.

KHQ-TV reports that the boy from Post Falls is accused of stealing a pack of gum. Police Chief Scott Haug says it's the first time in his 30 years in law enforcement that he's ever seen an arrest warrant for someone that young.

How can anyone say this is good for the kid and is "teaching him a lesson" by arresting him over stealing a pack of gum and not showing up to court? The kid probably doesn't understand what a court summons even is.
That is ridiculous.

Well, shit! they gotta raise money, because they don't make Cabella's or Walmart pay taxes.

I live near there, and it really is a fascist dystopia.

How can a 9 yr old be placed in juvenile detention for failing to appear in court twice - when he cannot drive or travel alone as a minor? I believe the parents have a lawsuit on their hands and can sue this prosecutor and his office for what he has done to the child. The child is being detained in juvenile detention over a pack of gum but prosecutor claims it was failure to appear twice. I believe he should lose his license to practice law. Permanently.

The tax dollars this prosecutor has cost the people with this ridiculous case is far more than a pack of gum. They should make him pick up the tab for this and fire him. Whatever it cost the city? Should come out of his pocket. It appears he wanted to make a name for himself. At the taxpayers expense.

A 9 year old should not pack a gun

I first read it that way too but its g-u-m.

Or, did you mean he shouldn't pack a pack of gum?

He must not be Black, else they would have shot him on the spot. As it is, one wonders if we'll soon be cutting off hands for stealing.

That's a great example of what this once great nation has turned into. It's not only wrong, it's damn pathetic, to say the least. And, it's hard to imagine this sick and degrading act, when considering some movie stars get a free pass for possession of hard illegal drugs. We many times don't go to this extreme with white collar crime. Please, a 9 year old boy? And, people wonder why so many citizens are angry and protesting in the streets. Go figure. We've gone straight downhill.

The prosecutor is trying to make a name for himself. The people need to demand this guy be removed.

Pack of gum! Can you believe it?! A pack of gum! How much money is this costing the taxpayers? How much money is it costing the taxpayer for this boy to be kept in juvenile detention? How much money will it cost the parents to hire an attorney to defend their 9 yr old child? The prosecutor should be fired.

Uh, no.

Historically, children have been treated much worse than we do now.

Nonetheless, this is a travesty.

This is one of those stories that will go away quickly

Public outcry, nationwide news coverage and overall mocking of the prosecutor will cause him to drop charges and claim it was all a big mistake

The people there don't have any brains. They keep reelecting that tea-bagger congressman that defended wife-beating. One can only hope the DOJ steps in...
