Here's a short-story about modernism paranoia related to urban angst, terrorism, crime syndicates, and of course, chemical warfare, inspired by Batman (DC Comics) stories and the upcoming film American Made (Tom Cruise).

Batman, the prince of Gotham/America was the official 'vigilantism priest' of the modern urban climate. Batman's primary mission was to ensure that modern-era ideology-based terrorism and crime syndication did not spiral downwards into the plight of chemical warfare.

Gotham City was beset by the urban war between two groups. One group was comprised only of the anarchist known as Joker (real named Jack Napier) and his ruthless and cunning 'girlfriend' Harley Quinn (real name unknown). The other group was known as the Red Hood and consisted of numerous individuals, including politicians (e.g., Bill Clinton), media-personalities/celebrities (e.g., Tom Cruise, Connie Chung), and athletes (e.g., Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, Serena Williams), and ex-CIA agents (e.g., Jack Ryan, John McClaine, Ali Pointe, Desdemona DeValera).

Joker and Harley Quinn called themselves the Evil Lovers, and Red Hood was informally led by Tom Cruise, who had just completed the politics-intrigue sarcasm film American Made. The Evil Lovers and Red Hood alike were interested in using chemical weapons such as tear-gas grenades, liquid-nitrogen guns, fear-inducing hallucinogens, and skin-corrosive acids. The Evil Lovers wanted to take advantage of modern consumerism/commerce in North America an Hong Kong to proliferate a lucrative opium-growing operation, and they received the financial backing from corrupt Dutch government officials. Red Hood wanted to interfere in this initiative by creating all levels of pedestrian mayhem in society and in media (and resorting to chemical-terrorism in Amsterdam).

Batman swooped in to save the day. He started distributing messages in the free-press about the long-term damages caused by chemical warfare and terrorism and even went so far as to claim this modern urban madness between the Evil Lovers and Red Hood reflected the commerce-based society corruption issues such as illegal steroids use by renowned professional athletes such as Barry Bonds. The Evil Lovers and Red Hood equally liked what Batman had to say about the plight of chemical warfare, so they negotiated a compromise --- they would entreat Batman to allow them to continue their 'ideological' war but refrain simply from outright terrorism/mayhem and chemical warfare. Batman conceded.

Years later, when Batman retired (as an old man), he bestowed his princely vigilantism duties to his young protege Nightwing (Dick Grayson). Nightwing inherited the war between the Evil Lovers and Red Hood, and even though Joker, Harley Quinn, Tom Cruise, and other Red Hood 'characters' were aged and considering 'retiring to havens,' new legions of 'urban upstarts' rose to don their mantle and take over under their titles. Nightwing remarked to himself, "dystopia and media continue..." Meanwhile, Tom Dyke (Duke University men's basketball coach and the U.S. Olympics men's basketball coach) was elected as the new U.S. President.
