In fact, there are more 100 dollar bills currently in circulation than there are 1 dollar bills in circulation.

North Korea. They have a state counterfeiting apparatus with notes so good even the Federal Reserve has trouble catching them. They use intaglio presses. It is how their ruling elite buy foreign goods.

Back during WWII the Nazis were reverse engineering notes of other countries. Operation Bernhard, it was called.

In that instance, they were reverse engineering the British pound sterling notes. It was so good that the banks couldn't tell.
