STATE POLICE IDENTIFY WEAPONS USED IN SANDY HOOK INVESTIGATION;
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES


In previous press conferences, the Connecticut State Police clearly identified all of the weapons seized from the crime scene at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

To eliminate any confusion or misinformation, we will again describe and identify the weapons seized at the school crime scene.



Seized inside the school:

#1. Bushmaster .223 caliber-- model XM15-E2S rifle with high capacity 30 round magazine



#2. Glock 10 mm handgun



#3. Sig-Sauer P226 9mm handgun



Seized from suspect’s car in parking lot:

#4. Izhmash Canta-12 12 gauge Shotgun (seized from car in parking lot)



The shooter used the Bushmaster .223 to murder 20 children and six adults inside the school; he used a handgun to take his own life inside the school. No other weapons were used in this crime. This case remains under investigation.

How the heck would else would you use is. Prevent means to ‘Keep (something) from happening or arising.’ By that definition, it is the exact word to use. There is no other word that fits that scenario. I don’t really see why you are fighting its use so hard other than to not admit that laws prevent some crimes form occurring.

Name another word that fits better. It’s not full proof. It is not a wall. It does not stop a crime in progress or someone that has already decided to commit one but it does, in the three ways mentioned, prevent crimes.

Not one single law prevents a crime from occurring. At best, it deters some people by the consequences if they are caught. If someone is intent on breaking a law, the consequences usually do not enter into the mind of the lawbreaker. Particularly if this person is thinking about killing someone. The time for prevention has long passed by the time they are holding a weapon, unless you are speaking of shooting him or her before he or she attacks an innocent.

Prevention is gun control, which equals never having to reload.

Make (someone or something) unable to do something: "window locks won't prevent a burglary".

This is different than, say, deterrence, where you provide an incentine to not choose a certain course of action. Laws against crime may very well deter soemone from comitting a crime but they cannot prevent them from doing so if they so choose.

The point is that crime-related legislation does nothing to make people unable to commit crime; it creates a basis for action against those who do commit it. The entire (false) premise behind background checks, etc, is the idea that legislation against crime can prevent crime.

The he ambushes the cop, kills him... by dropping something heavy on him from a second story window. The method is irrelevant because killing people is mechanically easy. Then he gets the AR15 out of the cop's trunk and kills a bunch of kids.
