Columbus Day is 12 October and was a legal holiday in Ohio.

Yes. Civilizations rise and fall in identifiable and identical cycles. In every phase of these historical cycles might and gold have made right or triumphed. Despite this disparaging reality of the human condition and very rarely, great civilizations do come into being—nations where men and women can live in relative peace, better themselves for their future generations, and enjoy decades if not centuries of political stability. America was and can again be such a place. The reelection of Donald Trump, love him or hate him or ignore him, is the only path back to such long term civilizational stability. In the end America will collapse into the dust of history. What we must focus on is a reality where America need not collapse just yet.

Probably because those tribes would have to turn around and give the money to the tribes they conquered.

Yes he did.

The argument is absurd. Yes he was by no means the first person or even the first European to discover the new world but he did discover it. It is also true he made a mistake thinking he crossed to the far East at first and not to the new world. But by his fourth voyage here he realized his error and actually landed in central america, probably near panama, and even tried to cross to the pacific. He discovered america for most Europeans ( not all) who had no idea it existed. This triggered the migration from Europe to the americas.

Columbus did not discover America first, but what he did was to perfect Celestial Navigation methods and record the route so others could follow behind him, and they did.

The impact of these accomplishments was to change the geopolitics of the world forever.

Western Europe changed from the backwater of Eurasia into the center of all trade and navigation in the world. This is why the 0 meridian runs through London, not Istanbul, Mecca or Delhi. Because Western Europeans wrote the navigational charts.

This also cut the economic trade foundation of middle Eastern Countries down to zip-zero-nada and they did not recover until the oil industry came to them and made them rich again.

Columbuses achievements allowed for global trade, and brought new foods to the old world.

Thank Columbus that you can eat tomatoes, watermelon, cucumbers and most other vegetables we have today.

Most of all, Columbus did allow for numerous European kingdoms to allow their dissidents to come to our continent and establish colonies that could experiment with novel forms of government, among them the Pilgrims of New England.
