An excerpt from the excellent book, "How Democracies Die"

From the book. "The second category in our litmus test is the denial of the legitimacy of one's opponents. Authoritarian politicians cast their rivals as criminal, subversive, unpatriotic, or a threat to national security or the existing way of life."

A top Justice Department official on Friday ordered the firing of at least eight senior FBI executives and a sweeping examination of the work of thousands of other bureau employees, including all those who worked on investigations tied to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to a memo obtained by The Washington Post.

If you don't have one get a copy of "How Democracies Die." It lays out 4 indicators of authoritarian behavior. Notes in italics are mine.

1. Rejection of (or weak commitment to) democratic rules of the game. Refusing to accept election results.
2. Denial of legitimacy of political opponents. Crooked Hillary, Obama birtherism.
3. Toleration or encouragement of violence. Pardon of J6 mob, encouraged violence at rallies.
4. Readiness to curtail civil liberties of opponents, including media. Threats to shut down critical media outlets.

At times it seems like he read the book and is following the blueprint. Then again, he doesn't read. Maybe someone presented it to him in cartoon form.
