Most 401(k) plans do not have FDIC coverage, with the exception of certain assets in a self-directed 401(k) plan, such as a solo 401(k). Bank accounts, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), held in self-directed 401(k) plans may be insured if the bank is an FDIC-insured institution.
 
Seriously, only a moron would be unaware that 401k's are at risk. If you have a 401k, every fucking document they ever send you emphasizes that these investments are not guaranteed and involve financial risk.

Who doesn't understand this? I'd like to hear from it.
