Been thinking what characterizes the difference between American patriots and nationalists.

Patriots pay taxes and Nationalists cut funding.

Patriots use the flag as a symbol of inclusion and Nationalists wield the flag for exclusion.

Patriots end wars for humanity and Nationalists start them for profits.

Patriots protect the vulnerable and Nationalists abuse on the weak.

Patriots share resources and Nationalists hoard them.

Patriots build coalitions and Nationalists build walls.

Patriots think of others and Nationalists think only of themselves.

We have far too many on USMB who confuse the two.

Subjective sloganeering by the Socialists.

I hope you didn't forego any sleep last night to dream these slogans up.

Of course you didn't, now tell us where you got this divisive tripe and acknowledge the source.

An excess of patriotism in the defense of a nation is called chauvinism or jingoism.

The difference between patriotism and nationalism is simple - a patriot loves his country and is proud of it for what it does whereas a nationalist loves his country and is proud of his country NO MATTER WHAT IT DOES.Apr 25, 2017

Nationalism must be distinguished from patriotism. Patriotism is fundamental to liberty because pride in one's nation-state, and a willingness to defend it if necessary, is the basis of national independence. ... Patriotism - Wikipedia

atriotism or national pride is the ideology of love and devotion to a homeland, and a sense of alliance with other citizens who share the same values. This attachment can be a combination of many different features relating to one's own homeland, including ethnic, cultural, political or historical aspects. It encompasses a set of concepts closely related to those of nationalism

Nationalism - Wikipedia

Nationalism is a political, social, and economic system characterized by the promotion of the interests of a particular nation, especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining sovereignty (self-governance) over the homeland. The political ideology of nationalism holds that a nation should govern themselves, free from outside interference, and is linked to the concept of self-determination. Nationalism is further oriented towards developing and maintaining a national identity based on shared, social characteristics, such as culture and language, religion and politics, and a belief in a common ancestry.[1][2] Nationalism, therefore, seeks to preserve a nation's culture, by way of pride in national achievements, and is closely linked to patriotism,

Differing between patriotism and nationalism is considered "Subjective sloganeering by the Socialists" by some low info unuseful tools of the far right, dontcha think.

Patriots will defend liberty to the utmost while nationalists will do their darnedest to deny it when it suits their selfish and immoral purposes.

Thank you! A patriot drinks coca-cola or a mountain dew, yes!

Most nationalists, imo, are weak on patriotism. The patriots of 1776 created a new country and national government ONLY after thirteen years of trying to get GB to treat the colonists as equal members of the Empire.

Those nationalists among our far right and alt right are not patriots and many are not conservatives.

The term "patriot" means someone who loves their country.

A Communist who loves their country wants the country to be Communist.

A Fascist who loves their country wants the country to be Fascist.

The problem is people use the term to mean what they want it to mean, and everyone else isn't a patriot because those people aren't like them.

We have too many confusing tags already. I don't mind if folks call me a patriot or a nationalist, a liberal or a conservative, a Buckeye or an Arizonan, just don't call me late for dinner.
