THE YEAR IN GUNS

While the tightening of gun laws following the Port Arthur massacre drastically reduced the number of guns in private ownership, it’s believed the figure has now climbed to even higher than before the devastating shooting.

There are currently around three million registered firearms in Australia, according to gun control researcher Philip Alpers from Sydney University’s School of Public Health. This compares to less than 2.2 million registered firearms in July 2001. He estimates that there are about 200,000 illegal handguns on the streets, many of them stolen.

I was told I was dumb for saying gun crime was increasing in Australia......

In New South Wales, weapons offences have risen 8.7 per cent per year over the past five years, to 11,471 in the year to September 2015. The New Daily reported in November that incidents involving firearms rose 83 per cent in NSW from 2005-6 to 2014-5. Charges for possession and trafficking of guns in South Australia saw a 49 per cent rise over four years.

Victoria is similarly affected, with a 52 per cent increase in firearms offences to 3645 between 2009-10 and 2014-15. In Tasmania, there was a 26 per cent increase in firearm-related offences between December 2012 and 2015.

Victoria police chief Steve Fontana this week expressed fears about the rapid increase in shootings in the past eight months.

The state’s Crime Statistics Agency Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said in December: “Weapons and explosives offences and drug use and possession offences have again seen statistically significant increases this quarter.”

2007...4 million Americans had concealed carry permits.....our crime rate went down, our gun murder rate went down...

2012...11.1 million Americans had concealed carry permits...320 million guns in private hands....our violent crime rate went down again,, our gun murder rate went down again.

2013..12.8 million Americans had concealed carry permits....over 320 million guns in private hands...and our violent crime rate went down again...and our gun murder rate went down again...

2014....13 million Americans had concealed carry permit....over 357 million guns in private hands....and our violent crime rate went down again...and our gun murder rate went down again...

What appears to be happening in Australia...their criminals may be starting to shoot each other more often......it may have to do with the fact that immigrant gangs are starting to grow there and do not share the cultural values of native Australians that generally kept the murder rate low.....even before the confiscation....
