I spent almost 3 years in Detroit, Michigan and it was an eye-opening experience and that was the start of my journey. I purposely moved to a poor part of Detroit after a year of working there. I was the minority and those folks accepted me as one of their own. I set aside a certain amount of money every pay day and randomly selected people to buy groceries for and/ or buy their dinner or their lunch as God led me to do. I have got to tell you about this one time...I was at a Ponderosa steak place and I asked God to pick out someone that I could buy dinner for while I waited for my take out order. People came in and I wasn't moved...then an elderly lady came in and ordered a bunch of chicken wings to go and I knew she was the one. The only problem was that the jacket I was wearing had holes in the pocket and I had put my bank card in the jacket and couldn't find it but I had some cash in my pocket. I came up and told her "I got this, Merry Christmas" as she was digging through her purse to come up with the money.... she started weeping and thanking me and I got a little weepy eyed as well because of her response.....guess how much the order was? 27 dollars and change...guess how much I had in my pocket at the time? That's right...27 dollars and change. That was God's way of telling me that I listened to him. After she left and we shared a hug, I finally found my bank card so I could pay for my order. It was a small gesture but to her it meant so much.
