with the aproval of the legislature
the governor DOESNT have the power without the approval
at least not in my state

Each state had their own rules about how to appoint senators. Some did it like your state, some had the senate select them and on and on.

Eventually. Looks like he's digging his heels in. How long will an impeachment and trial take? Does Illinois just remain without a second senator for the whole time?

That might hurt the Obama agenda. Delaware, New York, Colorado and Ill. all have to appoint senators. The Repubs could do some serious filibustering as the first 100 days fritter away.
