They were facing an angry mob on their property. And this was in the context of an extended period of violence and arson in the surrounding neighborhoods. Media reports of them "taking it to the suburbs" were as credible as anything the press has reported lately. The police had advised them they would not be responding. Some of the protesters were taunting them with death threats giving more of an appearance of a lynch mob than a weekly Bible study group. A metal gate had been smashed to gain entry to the property. They were entirely reasonable in their actions. If anything, they were a bit reserved about it. You can't say they had planned or laid a trap seeing as how they didn't even have shoes on during the incident.

It depends. Breaking into an occupied home is. If someone is visibly armed, yes. But merely walking across someone's lawn unarmed is not. And the protesters didn't even walk across their lawn. At worst, it was misdemeanor trespassing because they were in the street and on the sidewalk inside of a private community. That is not a threat.

Question for you ... if you saw folks in front of your house and believed they were armed and there to kill you and burn your house to the ground -- would you point a non-functioning gun at them with your finger on the trigger while standing about 20 feet away from them without cover...? Openly possessing a weapon and having it in your hands on your own property is not against law and is in fact a right protected by the US Constitution. And in this instance proved to be the wisest action they could have taken.

That isn't what happened. The rioters had broken in just as surely as if they had kicked in the door to the house. There were many of them yelling and generally displaying ill will. The situation was exactly the reason for the Constitutional protection we have. The confiscation of their weapons was in fact a violation of their Constitutional rights which is the obvious reason the Mayor wants them charged with a felony to make that crime legal after the fact.
