The U.S. Justice Department announced Monday it has successfully accessed data stored on the iPhone that belonged to the San Bernardino gunman without Apple's help, ending the court case against the tech company.

The surprise development effectively ends a pitched court battle between Apple and the Obama administration.

The government told a federal court Monday, without any details, that it accessed data on gunman Syed Farook's iPhone and no longer requires Apple's assistance

Did they have the Islamic Terrorist emoji on it....?

Good. Hopefully this will lead to some actionable intel that we can use to take down ISIL even further.

But now, it kinda makes me wonder................can the FBI use the code that cracked the San Bernadino shooter's phone to crack others as well?

Chances are, we'll never know. At least, not until the FBI shows up on your doorstep and says they are investigating you for terror threats.

You bet they can.....the price Apple pays for not cooperating.

Why get Apple to do it when you can pay Hackers real money to do it for you!

They just got one of their kids to do it for them.....

"hackers"? The FBI is the premiere crypto/forensic agency in the world....they can eventually identify a bomber by the the mixture of ingredients used in an explosive device and find DNA that's decades old. If you want to keep something hidden, pray the FBI doesn't come looking for it.

But I was assured that it was just your run-of-the-mill workplace violence and not Islamic terrorism.

I have no doubt that either the FBI or the NSA could have broken the code anytime they wanted with a little effort.

But the government wanted a precedent setting court case for future litigation against individuals and companies.

When the Apple case looked like a loser. They went ahead and broke the code to save face and avoid a lost court case. .....

Apple would have eventually lost in court anyways. Between the War on Drugs and the War on Terror, the Fourth and Fifth Amendments are dead.

Ah, then you're one of these "do whatever the gummint says" bender-overs. Informative.

Shame if all they get is the scores for solitaire or candy crush

Certainly did not take the Israelis long to crack the phone.

Expect anything you place in a location that connects itself to the rest of the world to be vulnerable. If it's that private, keep it off your phone.

Now prosecute Apple for treason.

It was not treason, it was protecting proprietary business information

It was never Apple's obligation to crack the phone for the FBI.

FBI wanted the programing from Apple. Only towards the end were the FBI willing to hand over the phone to Apple, but would not let them destroy the phone after the information was extracted to protect how they did it.

It was obstruction of justice. The FBI had probable cause to see the contents of the phone and Apple willfully aided in the obstruction of access to the contents.
