Bristol Palin Attacks Highly Successful Government Free Birth Control Programs For Teens As 'Crazy'
"Do you remember what it was like to be a 10 year old? I remember being an unabashed tomboy concerned with playing outside and acing 5th grade,” she wrote in a blog post. "But life isn’t so innocent and carefree for some 10 years old [sic] in Washington State. This summer a report came out claiming that some schools in Washington were giving free birth control implants to children as young as 10 years old! These birth control devices are implanted in a girl’s uterus, and all of this can be done without a parent’s consent!"
Calling it "crazy" and "outrageous," Palin cites a report conducted by the right-wing Judicial Watch on the prevalence of government-funded birth control in Washington state. The report refers to Take Charge, a program that works to help prevent unplanned pregnancies by providing birth control, including IUDs.
The way Palin presents it, one would think that every fifth grader in the class had an IUD. But the report shows that only four 11-year-olds got birth control from the state during the two and a half-year period of the study. The majority of women who got IUDs were between 16 and 17.
She also cited her concern with the “side-effects” of IUDs and called the program “crazy."
However, IUD’s are very safe and are one of the most effective birth control options available. Colorado implemented a similar program. "From 2009 to 2013, the state's birthrate among teens declined 40 percent, while the teen abortion rate dropped 42 percent," reports theHuffington Post, pointing to a New York Times article that called it "a startling success."
