if the M4 is suppressed. Do it the same way that the Africans do it (using an AK) Stalk to within 10 yds, Aim low, to allow for the muzzle rising in rock and roll mode, fire a short burst of ball ammo into one lung, and run like hell! 
The elephant can't run all that fast, anyway, and with one lung ruined, he can't run far, either.
An elephant's lung is over 2 ft in diameter. You'll get several (more or less complete) penetrations of one lung, with a 1/4 second, full auto burst (ie, 3-4 shots) Wait 24 hours and look for circling buzzards. The tusker will cough up blood from the ruined lung, inhale it into his other lung, and drown in his own blood. I never said that this shooting was NICE, or sportsmanlike. I just said that it can be DONE, and it can, obviously. Every other sort of land critter can be dropped with a 223 softpoint to the brain.
