Texting drivers are psychopaths but none of these tactics will work until they are combined with severe penalties such automatic licenses suspension. This crime is worse than DUI since many people honestly don't realize they are drunk, but texting drivers know what they're doing.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that at any given daytime moment, over 600,000 drivers are using cell phones or other electronic devices while they are driving. In 2012, over 421,000 drivers were injured due to distracted driving, and 3,328 people were killed, the agency says.

Here is a quick rundown on the latest techniques the police are employing to spot texters.

1. The panhandler on the corner

Canadian cops dress up as panhandlers in order to get up close and personal with drivers. Officers in Ontario and British Columbia have slipped on hoodies, donned baseball caps and clutched tattered cardboard signs (complete with misspellings) before hitting busy street corners.

Their cardboard signs offer an upbeat message on one side and a clear warning on the other. One read, "My name is Constable Mike Cairns. If you are reading this sign you are about to get a cell phone ticket."

Officers in one Burlington, Ontario, handed out 61 tickets in a single day, only to shatter that total the very next day with 111 citations written.

A PR campaign against texting drivers would do a lot of good. Put up signs along highways that say " Texting drivers are psychos and don't care if they kill you, their passengers, or even themselves".

As long as this crime is punished with mere fines, the critics will say it's all about revenue and they have a point.

This is an EASY problem to fix.

Tie Cel Phones into car electronics, when the car's in gear, the textie no workie.

Exactly no different than front mounted DVD players that will not play when the vehicle is in gear.

What would you want done with them?

As i explained in the OP, they should get an automatic license suspension. Even first offenders should get a year.

Why do you want to coddle these killers?

The automakers love texting drivers and they fight any attempt by legislators to suspend the licenses of these deadly killers. Car crashes mean car sales.

^^^ If that is how the dealership people look at car crashes, apparently they don't realize that those who die in the crashes can not replace whatever is totaled in the crashes.

God bless you and them always!!!

You miss the point. The car makers don't want drivers to die. That's why they give us air bags. But they want cars to die.

While I agree texting while driving in the eyes of the law should be considered a severe offense with a fine and DL points, your approach is beyond draconian.
Calm down, You do the cause to end texting while driving no favors by coming across as a fire and brimstone fanatic

True, but if a crash is bad enough, not even the air bag can save a person.

God bless you always!!! :) :) :)
