You're correct. Except we have gone through other periods of volatility where cops were killed as a result of hostility from the general public. By the same token one has to ask about the reasons for the excessive ease with which cops shoot unarmed black men.
And what do you mean by "excessive ease?"
Cops have always been allowed to protect themselves, even less now than ever. Instead of questioning what's going on with the police, perhaps you'd get better results by asking what's happening on the black side of the matter.
Nearly all police shootings end up being justified either by investigation or grand jury. There are anomalies of course, but police are not looking to kill anybody unless they have to.
However all police shootings do have one thing in common, and that is the subject didn't listen to the orders of police. Whether the police were right or wrong, if the suspect just listened to the police and followed all their orders, most if not all of those suspects would be alive today.
