Cutting Weight

> Stoliarenko then got back on the scale and made weight at 135.5 pounds before appearing to nearly collapse again.

That's "the usual" problem cheating on the weight class in wrestling. Wrestlers build their bodies, but then they dehydrate themselves dangerously to weigh in just under their assigned competition weight class cut-off, but after drinking up and rehydrating to a normal blood volume they'd be in the next weight class up if they had properly weighed in for the match.

She's too big and strong for her weight class, and she's cheating to stay under the cut-off.

Wrestling and boxing sports officials are going have to enforce a no-food no-drink no-water rule between the weigh-in and the match to keep the contestants in their weight classes.

That's not going to happen, especially when the weigh in is 24 hours before the fight; however, I agree with you that the dehydrating to make the weight needs to stop.

Such a rule would make it even more dangerous.

A better idea would be to dug test them for loop diuretics like furosemide and spironolactone, the drugs they use to dehydrate themselves. Abuse of these drugs can cause permanent kidney damage.

It's not "cheating," it's just making weight. The UFC can address this by adopting some of the same rules that NCAA wrestling implemented long ago.

Preventing fighters from drinking water when the problem is dehydration in the first place would be kinda stupid and almost certainly illegal.

Cutting weight over and over for many years can result in the joy of kidney stones later in life.

Not fun.

It does not go on today. Rules were implemented years ago to address such practices.
