You need to study more WW2 history, but more so, the sociology involved in Hitler's life, and the decades leading up to it. First, Hitler was fascinated by the works of left wing icons Marx, Darwin, and George Shaw. All believed in eugenics, or the use of huge government to cleanse a population of unwanted people. Creating a perfect race of humans. Shaw advocated science creating a "humane gas" to kill off "surplus humans" and even said classical music should be played during this to calm them. Hitler, of course, ran with it. Hitler hated these men personally, because of the pesky Jew thing, but liked their ideas.

Hitler, of course, was the head of the National "SOCIALIST" Party of Germany (NAZI). Saying they aren't socialist is like saying the Communist Party of Russia isn't Communist.

Hitler also believed in using fanatical environmentalism to begin his brainwashing of citizens. His "brown shirts" and Hitler youth early on were heavily into the green movement. They pushed Earthly purity, which would of course lead to purity of the human race. This is a fact that has been strongly buried in history classes, as it doesn't vibe with todays environmentalists, but it's all so sadly true. One could not be brianwashed into believing in racial and human purity without first being convinced of the need for environmental purity, or so Hitler believed.

Hitler of course also wanted to use the massive government to ban books, ban gun ownership, take over all education, all healthcare.....sound familiar? Sure, Hitler identified himself as a Chrisitan. But so did Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Hitler also was fascinated by the occult, and the connection between the environmental, spiritual and physical world.

I think what offends left wingers about the reality of the Nazi Party being a socialist, left wing movement is that to say this they think we are impying they feel that way also. And I know 100% that isn't true. 99.9% of lefties despise Nazi ideology. But what I think the difference is....is that most left wingers see socialism as an ideal which they feel is better for the whole of citizens. Many of us on the right see socialism as a TOOL. A tool that can be used for good, like Denmark, Norway, or a tool that can evolve like a cancer into pure evil, like the USSR, China, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, and yes, Nazi Germany. It's the framework that the tool of socialism provides that allows the big government to grow, and become either benign like Norway, or malignant like the USSR or Nazi Germany.

But the point of it is, by allowing the socialist framework to be slowly brought into our culture, we are creating that tool, which could fall into evil hands in future decades.

Thats the reality of it. The framework of what Hitler used isn't that much different from Denmark, Norway, etc, as the government has a LOT of control over education, healthcare, gun rights, work, pay, etc, etc, etc. So it's not so much the ideology that we feel is dangerous, it's the tools and framework that ideology provides to future leaders that is scary.

The United States could turn full bloom socialist tomorrow, and we may just end up like a giant Norway, Sweden, modern Germany, etc. Or, in 20 years we may see a new USSR, China, N. Korea or Nazi Germany. But big government socialism is what provides the opportunity for that cancer to either be harmless, or grow nasty.

So the argument of whether Hitler and the Nazis were socialist isn't even an issue. Their party name even says it. It's what they did with the tools and framework that socialism provides that was evil. So when we bring that up, we aren't implying you or Pelosi or other left wingers sympathize with Nazis. We're saying that socialism provides a framework for those things to exist. And as a society moves to the right, the less chance of one of those massive evil governments. And of course, all socialists don't wear a blue D. Bush created DHS, which is a massive, socialist type beaurocracy. That is a framework which could go good or bad. Add to it Obamacare, and on down the road, more framework. We're trying to reverse that.

So thats it in a nutshell. Norway is good socialism. Nazis were bad socialism. But embracing socialism opens the door for both possible outcomes. Lets just leave that door closed.

But surely the real villain is extremism in any form.
I accept that too much governmental control in its most extreme form can lead to the outcome you describe.
On the other side, too little governmental control could lead to a bad place as well...Somalia for example.
Whether you look Left or Right there is always a slippery slope in the distance, the trick is to have the moderating systems in place.
