How about we let drug addicts die. Start denying treatment for an overdose. See how far that gets. Then we can move on to letting people die of AIDS. That treatment is very expensive, why not just let them go?

How about we let people who don't exercise enough die? Or, let those who drive fast die from injuries sustained in auto accidents? How about we don't treat victims of plane crashes because flying is inherently risky? How about we refuse healthcare to skydivers and rock climbers and crop duster pilots? Why not soldiers? It IS voluntary, you know?

The list is endless. Once you let the health-Nazi's get that foot in the door, there's no stopping.

And, instead of trying to make is an ideological, political issue (both sides are in on it), how about we simply join hands across the aisle and say, "Screw you" to the Nanny State?

Gottlieb's view is debatable. There are plenty of public health researchers that can show smoking control measures have brought down smoking rates and who will argue that smoking taxes are not regressive so long as money is earmarked for programs that help poor people quit smoking.
