Simple as that. I don't care WHAT SIDE you are on as far as Israel goes this is COMPLETELY unconstitutional and goes against the first amendment.

Holy crap Democrats are evil.

The latest evidence of that slavishness comes in the form of growing support among Democrats in both Houses for legislation sponsored by Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) and co-sponsored by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer that would make it a felony for Americans to support the international boycott against Israel, commonly known as BDS. Anyone guilty of violating the prohibitions will face a minimum civil penalty of $250,000 and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years in prison.

This would run afoul of the First Amendment. It would never withstand a court challenge.

Of course, you are lying. It does not criminalize criticism of Israel but only organizations that join boycotts of any country friendly to the US called for by foreign nations or organizations. In fact, the bill specifies that if some one is put on trial under this bill, no statement he has made critical of Israel can be used against him at trial. While it is true that the impetus for this bill was the rabidly anti semitic ranting and threats of the UNHRC, as the bill is written, it protects all nations friendly to the US from boycotts from foreign nations organization, and it does not prohibit Americans from boycotting Israel or any other country unless they are participating is a boycott called for by a foreign nation or organization. So you and other members of your cult are free to boycott Israel and shout any anti semitic slogans you like as long as you are joining with foreigners in a boycott.

I am a progressive Democrat

I support a two state solution to the middle east issue and do not blindly support Israel- Although I support their right to exist.

I am opposed to this proposal to stifle protest and free speech which is supported by a small minority of democrats

So cut the crap already

The bill does not in any way stifle protest or prevent free speech.

This bill declares that Congress: (1) opposes the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution of March 24, 2016, which urges countries to pressure companies to divest from, or break contracts with, Israel; and (2) encourages full implementation of the United States-Israel Strategic Partnership Act of 2014 through enhanced, governmentwide, coordinated U.S.-Israel scientific and technological cooperation in civilian areas.

The bill amends the Export Administration Act of 1979 to declare that it shall be U.S. policy to oppose:

  • requests by foreign countries to impose restrictive practices or boycotts against other countries friendly to the United States or against U.S. persons; and
  • restrictive trade practices or boycotts fostered or imposed by an international governmental organization, or requests to impose such practices or boycotts, against Israel.
The bill prohibits any U.S. person engaged interstate or foreign commerce from supporting:

  • any request by a foreign country to impose any boycott against a country that is friendly to the United States and that is not itself the object of any form of boycott pursuant to United States law or regulation, or
  • any boycott fostered or imposed by any international governmental organization against Israel or any request by any international governmental organization to impose such a boycott.
The bill amends the Export-Import Bank Act of 1945 to include as a reason for the Export-Import Bank to deny credit applications for the export of goods and services between the United States and foreign countries, opposition to policies and actions that are politically motivated and are intended to penalize or otherwise limit commercial relations specifically with citizens or residents of Israel, entities organized under the laws of Israel, or the government of Israel.

Sometimes it's good idea to get the facts before forming an opinion. something you might want to consider in the future.

It is not one bit unconstitutional. There is long-standing legal precedent, supported by multiple Supreme Court decisions. Private citizens do not have the right to organize boycotts of foreign nations. Only the U.S. government has the right to take economic action against a foreign nation.

EXCERPT:

Article I Section 8 of the Constitution contains the “Commerce Clause” which gives Congress the power to “regulate Commerce with foreign Nations.” This means that a private boycott against a foreign government is not “free speech” like the domestic boycotts of the civil rights Movement. Rather, it is a tool of statecraft that, like war, is reserved to the federal government alone.

I'm not so sure that's what the actual text says.....

Then there is a related bill with pretty much the same language.....

H.R.1697 - 115th Congress (2017-2018): Israel Anti-Boycott Act

BUT this one also says.....
Latest Action: House - 06/28/2018 Committee Agreed to Seek Consideration Under Suspension of the Rules, by Unanimous Consent. (All Actions)
