I take it you are unfamiliar with agriculture. There have been farm workers that crossed the border to work then went back across almost since the southwest was settled.
In fact one of the reasons marijuana was demonized was during a depression it was pointed out that Mexican migrants were openly smoking it while whites were out of a job. The idea was that poor whites could take those jobs. Didn't actually work out well since those farm jobs carried a stigma.
