Unbeknownst to most of us, there are many ways to end a fire. One of the most obvious ways, that only the stupidest of idiots would think that they thought of first, is to fly helicopters over a fire that can pour water on it. Other methods include blowing on a fire. Can you think of any other techniques?

The traditional way to put out a wildfire is by pouring water on it. Why in the world would you call these heroic people "stupidest idiots"?

Hmm not sure about that one. However calling the fire department is usually a good idea

Except for the fat ones. All that grease would cause quite a conflagration.

Beknownst to anyone who has ever picked up a book.

It's basic practical knowledge.

Well suppose, hypothetically, a famous building was on fire and it captured the attention of the entire country. The President of that nation declared a national emergency and all the most expert firefighters in the country and possibly the world were working on putting it out. Then some dumb celebrity chimes in saying “you know, I hear they can put water on helicopters and dump it on stuff.” Would that reflect well on the really stupid celebrity?

Well, you could always pull out your dick, and piss on it.

or, do a little bit of research, and find out that planes and helicopters have been dropping water on fires for decades.

Ever see a movie about putting out oil well fires?

They put them out, by blowing them with dynamite.

Excuse me, sir; do I sense snark in that reply?

Tell her "yes that dress makes you look fat"?

Depending on the fire will depend on what you use to put it out. Alpha fires can be put out with water, Bravo fires require a smothering agent, Charlie fires require a chemical powder or CO2, and Delta fires, well..............you push them over the side, or you let them burn out, because they make their own oxygen.

And, while a helo has been shown to put out a small apartment fire on a building, it was only 1/8th to 1/10th the size of the fire in Notre Dame, and they were able to put it out, but only after 2 drops, because the first one missed. I'd like to know how much the collateral damage was from the first drop that missed.

And, the apartment fire that was shown being put out by a helo in the city didn't produce nearly as much smoke as the fire at Notre Dame. Because of the amount of smoke, it would have been very difficult to get accurate drops.

And, did you know that the hotter the air is, the less lift that can be generated by the helo rotors? I'm guessing that the air over the church would have been too hot to safely fly a helo in there.

What effect does cold weather have on helicopter performance?

So in general, the colder it is, the higher the performance. In most helicopters, the difference in performance on a cold, dry winter day is very noticeable and much better than on a humid, hot summer day.

It's also worth understanding the properties of air. The colder the air, the lower the dewpoint so the less moisture it can contain. Moisture in the air also lowers peformance.

Good. Can’t be having any fun around here.

You are right. Planes and helos have been used for years to help put out fires. But, have you considered the fact that helos require certain conditions to fly in? And, most helos are flown by VFR, which is visual flight rules. With all the smoke and heat being generated, are you sure it was safe to try to put it out? Another poster showed a helo putting out a small apt. fire, but they missed the first time, and the cathedral fire was 8 to 10 times bigger than the apt. fire, which means more heat and smoke. Post 13 has a link that shows that cold, dense air is more favorable to helos than hot thin air.

Are you sure? Our esteemed President seems to think he is really helping lifelong firefighters by informing them of this.

You know, I don't really think it was for the fire fighter's benefit that Trump made those comments. He figured that pointing to an easy solution would stir up his base, because they would be saying the same stupid stuff, but after Trump's tweet, they would try to say they are as smart as Trump.

That ain't saying much, by the way.
