Like the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 Involved the dismemberment of a political empire for reasons that were largely out of its control. These two events eventually led to the rise of authoritarian figures who sold their dreams of reunification to their populations. Is it really any wonder that Hitler invaded a hostile Poland or that Putin invaded a hostile Ukraine? Gloating over the misfortune of others seldom leads to peaceful resolution of perceived threats.
