The simple fact is Putin fucked up when he decided to take his war to Kyiv rather than simply carving off the Donbass area. He will likely end up with Donbass anyway but is going to have to pay in spades where he could have gotten it for free.

Not to mention that his actions alone have unified NATO in a way that no other action or person has been able to do for several decades. And the Russian people are going to pay for this action for decades to come as well. Even more so as the entire planet is going to start distancing itself from Russian imports and moving to sources that are not as unstable and not as militant. If Putin wanted to increase US influence, he certainly did succeed there....

Putin is so powerful he manages a nation that has a smaller economy than TX alone yet has 5 times the population. The only 'power' Putin really has is leftovers from soviet nuclear arsenals. That is it. Other than MAD, he is utterly irrelevant.
