Things are very tense in that neck of the woods.

"In a case that ruffled feathers in Egypt, authorities have detained a migratory bird that a citizen suspected of being a spy.

A man in Egypt's Qena governorate, some 450 kilometers (280 miles) southeast of Cairo, found the suspicious bird among four others near his home and brought them to a police station Friday, said Mohammed Kamal, the head of the security in the region.

There, officers and the man puzzled over the electronic device attached to the suspected winged infiltrator. On Saturday, a veterinary committee called by concerned government officials determined the device was neither a bomb nor a spying device.

Instead, they discovered it was a wildlife tracker used by French scientists to follow the movement of migrating birds, said Ayman Abdallah, the head of Qena veterinary services. Abdallah said the device stopped working when the bird crossed the French border, absolving it of being an avian Mata Hari."

The stress level must be very high. I am surprised the bird was not subject to some draconian law and was beheaded.

Turkey Captures Bird, Accuses It of Spying for Israel

"The Milliyet newspaper reported that the kestrel – a type of falcon – was X-rayed at a university hospital to search for any microchips or bugging devices. Only when the scans came up clear was the bird allowed to go free."

The Egyptian police have arrested a duck after a device was found attached to its feathers and it was suspected of being a 'spy'.
A fisherman in the Nile River of Egypt's southern governorate Qena caught the ‘accused’ bird, which was among a group of five ducks waddling in fresh water. The fisherman became suspicious as a device was attached to the duck's body, and he handed over the bird to the Coalition of Arab Tribes in Qena, who in turn filed a police report.
The police put the duck under arrest late Friday, according to news reports.

the CIA has had its own share of using animals to spy

they tried to train a cat one time to spy on some Russians

--------------------

"In an hour-long procedure, a veterinary surgeon transformed the furry feline into an elite spy," Anthes explains, "implanting a microphone in her ear canal and a small radio transmitter at the base of her skull, and weaving a thin wire antenna into her long gray-and-white fur."

The goal was to transform the female feline into "a living, walking surveillance machine." Anthes said the CIA hoped to train the cat to sit near foreign officials, in order to eavesdrop on their conversations.

Amazingly, the poor cat lived through the operation.

"For its first official test," Anthes wrote, "CIA staffers drove Acoustic Kitty to the park and tasked it with capturing the conversation of two men sitting on a bench."

"Instead," she continued, "the cat wandered into the street, where it was promptly squashed by a taxi."
