I think you're confusing two facts here ... starting with how ice cores are removed from the ice sheet ... drilling products heat ... lots of heat ... and there's no point in drilling for meltwater ... duh ...

The "-200ºF" factoid is your ruin ... this is dry ice ... the Russians are cryogenically cooling the ice to -200ºF so as to not melt the shit while they drill ...
