The existence of the 2nd amendment, not just as a Federal law (repealable by a few elected Federal officials) but as a part of the U.S. Constitution (repealable only by a LARGE majority of states, as far from the Federal govt as possible), establishes in the most basic way, that this is a government by the people.
It is a fundamental part of this nation that 300 million Americans will always be more heavily armed than 1 million members of the Armed Forces... only a fraction of whom fight and put themselves in harm's way, while the rest sit in chairs and shuffle papers.
And the people who founded the United States made sure that, in any basic and visceral conflict between the people and the government, the people would ALWAYS win.
Unsurprisingly, the Democrats have resisted that idea for most of our living memory. It goes directly against their government-uber-alles agenda.
