A journalist jumping in the ocean following the fish trying to catch a whale has a better chance of success than he has following the money trying to uncover corruption in high places. The enormous resources the government devotes to following dirty money results in few convictions. The conviction rate for following counterfeit money is not much better. That is why I was skeptical of the phrase “Follow the money.” before I read Jon Cassidy’s great piece:
