Recovery .... what recovery?

Food stamps are a billion-dollar business in Oregon

In 2013, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that Oregon retailers redeemed $1.2 billion worth of food stamps, up from $366 million in 2003.

While the unemployment numbers may be dropping ( so we're told ), families are still not making enough to be self-supporting. Many jobs pay so little, that workers need additional assistance with basic living expenses. In reality, the economy is still drifting negative, and numbers other than the unemployment figures reveal the extent of economic decline.

Poverty is real, and more citizens are experiencing it than at any time since the great depression 80 plus years ago. And even though the media tries to put a positive spin on the economy, the story on Main Street America tells the real situation and the hardships felt by many families. We're now providing not only food assistance, but also providing health care assistance, housing, utilities, and transportation assistance. Meanwhile, we're allowing a tremendous influx of illegal immigrants to cross our borders, which further strains government assistance programs.

Another indication of our obvious economic decline, is the drop in home ownership. Many citizens are being "price gouged" by excessive monthly rent due to the demand. Over all, except for very select areas of the country, economic decline is taking its toll on many that were once doing well and considered to be Middle Class and upper Middle Class. Wealth concentration at the top is causing economic pain across the spectrum of society, and there're no signs of change in the near future. The poor are getting poorer, and the rich are getting richer.

Recreational Marijuana becomes legal in two months here. You watch, somewhere in all that mess pot will end up being purchased by welfare benefits.

For those that really want it, it's already being purchased. And, so is alcohol and tobacco products. I wouldn't doubt that hard drugs are also being purchased.

But, that has absolutely nothing to do with those that really need help, and are very responsible citizens. We can't throw a blanket over the whole lot just because some take unfair advantage of the system. We have genuine need, spread across the spectrum from the elderly and handicapped, to the helpless children.
