The “owner operator” pitch became a way for trucking companies to manipulate people to work for less money, worse hours and not have to provide any benefits.

It was incredibly predatory and a huge reason that trucking has (before the pandemic) a huge turnover problem and inability to maintain long term staff, they were constantly relying on new people to make the same mistakes that ruined the people they were replacing.

People are starting to wake up to the abuses of their employers and backing out.

But starting day one, they're "owners" under a tremendous amount of debt that they owe to the trucking companies. Oh, and they definitely have exclusivity deals so they're not really their own boss, they're stuck taking whatever their "don't call them a boss" offers them. Oh, and if they quit they owe the trucking companies thousands of dollars for their training programs. That's money they don't have because the trucking companies take a huge chunk of their "paycheck" anyway.

Do you know what the turnover rate in the trucking industry is? It's through the damn roof because they burn out people and are constantly looking for new suckers to convince of their shitty deal.

Entrepreneurs and self employed don't want that company crap, they can go to a company if they want to be an employee. They don't want to be mandated into identifying as employees.

With unemployment compensation for simply being unemployed on an at-will basis in our at-will employment States, labor could potentially go to school as long as they want or until they command the market based wage they desire to provide labor input to the economy.

I'm not saying being an owner-operator is always bad. I'm saying the trucking companies are guilty of some predatory tactics that are coming back to bite us all in the ass.
 
From my perspective, not only should we not have any security problems in our free State but we should also not have any fire problems either.
