There is one meaning for gentleman. And you appear unable to grasp it.

It is not about whether someone is a merchant or a warrior. It is about how they face the world and how they treat others.

Military men were expected to be gentlemen. Merchants were often gentlemen as well. It is a function of manners and dignity.

As well as a general expectation in civilized society.
