Things can be done to try and minimize things.
If you want to just play around with the stats, yeah I guess you could just outright ban things. Assuming that you somehow managed to make all guns disappear (stopped smuggling of guns, managed to get every gun out there to disappear, etc), yeah shootings would decrease. But you would see a large uptick in stabbings, beatings, etc.
I’d bet you’d also see a rise in things like home invasions, mugging, etc as a result of criminals emboldened knowing the won’t be shot.
I think the best we can do is try to improve the fabric of society so that violent crime in general decreases.

On FOX this morning (I doubt that other "news" sources will report it), I learned that the mayor of Atlanta has publicly deplored the high number of murders in that city. It has not been this bad since the 1990s.

We have the highest homicide rates in the industrialized world.
