The global warming nut cases are drawing up plans for geo-engineering to counter-act what they consider to be man made damage.

one idea is to shoot sulfur into the upper atmosphere to create what they think is going to be a shield from the sun.

another idea is to set mirrors in space to deflect 2% of the sun's rays.

(there is intricate politics going on as some of these ideas are being set up as a "conservative" approach to solve Global Warming, something they officially don't believe in.
i guess when the project turns into a disaster they're going to say the conservatives did it.)

ironic that the global warming people are going to destroy the planet by telling people they are fixing it.

we need a total change in politics to tell these people to go get a real job

Years ago I proposed launching retractable Gargoyle sunglasses in geosynchronous orbit. We stop age and make Earth look badass in the process

Shooting sulfur into space and launching mirrors into orbit brings the concept of a global thermostat to my mind. Whose hand will control that thermostat, the Pentagon or Goldman Sachs?

First, geo-engineering is only a solution of the last resort. It will not even be proposed until the situation is bad enough there is no other choice.

Second, given what we are seeing in the Arctic Ocean, we had better be looking at what we are capable of doing should the Arctic clathrates start outgassing. Already we have seen boils more than a kilometer in diameter where the clathrates are venting directly to the atmosphere. Consider that, in a span of a decade, CH4 is 60 to 100 times as effective of a GHG as CO2.

The increasing amount of open water in the Arctic in the summer is creating one hell of a feedback loop. Some numbers to consider.

Ice reflects 90% of the energy of the sunlight into space. Of the 10% it absorbs, it takes 334 Joules of energy to melt one gram of ice. That is, one gram of 0 degree ice is converted to one gram of 0 degree water.

Now when that same sunlight is on open water, 90% is absorbed, and only 10% is reflected back into space. So, that 334 Joules of energy now heats 79.8 grams of water one degree. But, since 90% of the energy of the sunlight is being absorbed instead of reflected, that same sunlight that once melted one gram of ice, 0 degree ice to 0 degree water, now heats 718 grams of water one degree.

The scientists are measuring a warming ocean, and that warming ocean is melting the Arctic ice. Which results in even more warming in the ocean. Which also results in outgassing of the clathrates in the Arctic Ocean, a process already began, much to the scientists chagrin. And a warming Arctic Ocean results in warmer air over the permafrost areas, resulting in even more CH4 and CO2 being put into the atmosphere.

What we really need is an increase in scientific literacy among the general population of Americans. People like Wolfstrike seem to think forming opinions on scientific subjects by listening to the maunderings of an obese junkie on the radio is the equivelent to doing real research on the issue.

Earth needs these glasses in orbit....to stop global warming...and scare the crap out of approaching asteroids

The problem is that if you could prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, to every man, woman and child on the planet, that we are on the edge of a disastor and laid out precisely what we need to do in order to avert that disastor, we still wouldn't do it. No matter what, we are going over the edge.

the only thing to do is kill every man, woman and child on the planet and there, the problem is solved. But the EARTH will change regardless if we are here or not.

If only we could shut down Western Civilization and live in the Workers Paradise

That's what LOLberal want. They want to shut down humanity to "save the planet".

Yet, they moan, groan and cry about the big pending doom and how no one will do anything and refuse to actually do anything themselves...except moan and cry.

A "workers paradise" is no less human than any other society. That would make no change at all. The reason nothing will be done is because: (1) the people who might actually be able to make a difference tend to be more concerned with themselves than with others,(2) a significant portion of the population won't care until it actually directly impacts them, (3) a small by as significant portion of the population will deny anything is happening no matter what the impact. The bottom line is that nothing will be done regardless of the information presented. We are like a deer population when you remove the predators. They will procreate until they eat all of the food and then they starve. Regardless of the cause, regardless of the arguments, we are going over the edge.

you left out 4) AGW is the biggest fucking pseudo-science scam since the Piltdown Man

Not according to the vast majority of scientists (something like 97% I believe). However, you see it as a "liberal" position and therefore it has to be wrong. The facts don't matter, only your ideology. As I said, there is a portion of the population who deny no matter what. If you were a deer, you would be saying the bushes dying had nothing to do with the herd overbrowsing them.

You're an idiot.

I don't remember Al Gore ragging on these guys....

Then you don't remember much at all, do you.

The statements in Gore's lectures and films concern the effect on the world as a whole from the GHGs that mankind, as a whole, is putting into the atmosphere.

Can't we just nudge the earth an extra million miles further out from the sun?
I guess we'd have to somehow take the moon with us too.

I've always proposed that the USA send millions of leftist tree-huggers up into space in a "spread" formation, provide them with reflective spacesuits, sunglasses, sun block, and lounge chairs, and let them reduce the sun's rays. :cuckoo:
