The GOP had a pretty good election in 2020, winning back an impressive number of House seats, while only losing a few in the Senate, which they will probably retain control of.

To Donald J Trump and his supporters though, this one had to sting...as many long time Republicans split their ticket, voting for down ballot GOP candidates, while joining Democrats in voting for Joe Biden. Now Donald Trump joins a very short list of incumbent Presidents in the last 50 years to be voted out of office after only 1 term.

As a party Republicans have gained in divesting themselves of an albatross. They might gain considerable ground with younger voters who can't stand maudlin mewing from the left of center. The further left folks now lack an easy and frequent target with which to make their agenda more widely heard. They lose somewhat there.
Of course, it is the infamous duopoly that always wins, and Republican of Democrat sides of it only serve it and one another. Thus, heads 'they' win, heads 'we' lose.
