I wish I knew more about aeronautics and engineering. Would ultra-light solar panels on the wings of the airplane be a way to provide supplemental energy so that jet fuel wasn't needed for the entire flight?

Solar panels don't produce thrust, which is required to keep modern jets aloft. They're on good for electric motors which can only turn propellers and not fast enough to even come close to the speeds of jets and couldn't handle modern payloads. And it would get dark before you could make it across an ocean.
