(Reuters) - Public safety officers armed with semi-automatic pistols will patrol Idaho State University for the first time on Tuesday to safeguard students and staff, in response to a new state law allowing concealed weapons on college campuses.

Arming eight officers and two supervisors with guns is among the security measures the school in the southeastern Idaho city of Pocatello has adopted in light of the new law, school officials said. Another Idaho university was considering a similar move.

"Our objective is to maintain a safe and secure campus environment. We are increasing our officers' capabilities to respond," Idaho State public safety director Steve Chatterton said in a statement.

The Idaho gun law, passed this year by the state's Republican-controlled legislature, allows retired law enforcement officers and those with so-called enhanced concealed-carry permits to possess guns on university grounds, including some child-care centers but not in dormitories or football stadiums.

Idaho lawmakers took the decision in the aftermath of a string of shootings at U.S. schools and public places, despite opposition from some faculty of the state's leading universities, who strongly opposed the measure.

Republican lawmakers who sponsored the bill argued it would enhance campus safety and bolster gun rights spelled out in the U.S. Constitution, while opponents feared it could endanger students and faculty.

An Idaho law goes into effect Tuesday allowing individuals to carry concealed guns on college campuses. And a state college is responding by arming public safety officers with semi-automatic pistols on campus to protect its students.

Idaho public colleges did not previously arm their campus officers. But Idaho State University director of public safety Steve Chatterton said equipping officers with guns has become necessary to “maintain a safe and secure campus environment” now that others are legally permitted to walk on campus with guns, Reuters reports. Boise State University is also seeking public funds to cover a program to arm its campus officers, at an estimated cost of $1 million per year.

Bet the tax payers are thrilled to be paying for armed guards to protect kids from nutters who can't even go to school without their pacifier.

What a disaster.

So guns are being used to protect against guns? Sounds good to me.

Mass shootings usually happen in Gun Free Zones anyway.

Now that it is NOT a gun free zone, it's less likely that a mass shooting WILL happen.

You know who commits mass shootings? People on Psychotropic Drugs.

How bout setting up Psychotropic Drug Free Zones?

It's a simple equation:

What a disaster.

The guards are already in place. Guns aren't that expensive.

Do you really have to dig this deep to put forth an already weak argument?
Nutty Luddite partakes of the anti-gun loon kool-aid - deep and often.

I'm betting they are wondering why the school didn't have armed guards before?

The number one thing we have learned is gun control laws DO NOT deter those intent on harming others.

That guy in California bought three guns, went through universal background checks, a 10 day waiting period, gun registration, and carried his guns into a "gun free zone".

Time to institute some measures that WILL protect the population.

All the universal background checks in the world wouldn't have saved one child at Newtown. But a trained teacher with a firearm could have.

That is an undeniable fact...a fact that is anathema to the gun-grabber crowd, because it means that the solution is firearms in the hands of good people...and their agenda cannot tolerate that truth.

The gun debate is growing so tired. Hell, I give the global warming topic more credit

Control is a dead issue. You will not succeed but have at it

Simple. There weren't any guns there so they didn't need guns.

Now that there are guns there, they need armed guards.

But, its true that those guns won't make any difference. The nutters here have said they would ignore "gun free" signs. That makes them the criminals.

There have been armed people at many of teh mass shootings we hear about but the unarmed bystander has disarmed the nutter just as often as a fellow nutter.

There is no evidence that a "good guy" with a gun is the answer to anything at all.

Why are there no mass shootings at gun shows and rifle/pistol/shotgun competition?
:dunno:

Guns aren't allowed at gun shows.

Doesn't stop the "accidental" shootings though.

And there not allowed at school. So, try to answer the OP question

-Geaux

You guys always do this little dance. He asked about gun shows so I answered about gun shows. You know my answer is true so you change the subject again.

Like it or not, guns are not the answer to anything.

Luddley let doesn't want to use tax money to make students safe. Of course if there weren't any mass killings, what would she write about?

You will never, ever see a progressive arguing to protect children. Ever. If they say a policy will increase safety, they are lying, and the policy is actually intended to kill MORE children.

They're like vultures. They see children as chattel, and commodities, whose only value is as political currency to be used to buck up their death cult.
