President Barack Obama gave a statement on the crisis in Ukraine Tuesday, announcing tougher U.S. sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, arms and finance.

"Today is a reminder that the United States means what it says," Obama said.

According to the Treasury Department, the U.S. penalties target the Bank of Moscow, the Russian Agricultural Bank and VTB Bank, the AP reports. Also listed on the Treasury designation is the United Shipbuilding Corp., which is based in St. Petersburg, Russia.

These new penalties against Russia follow tougher sanctions agreed to by European Union leaders earlier on Tuesday. White House spokesman Josh Earnest commented on the EU sanctions before Obama spoke, calling them welcome news.

"Russia is once again isolating itself from the international community, setting back decades of progress," Obama said. "It doesn't have to be this way."

Thank you, Mr. President. Sanctions are better than war.

It's this toughness from Obama that makes me absolutely confident Putin needed to ask permission from Obama before shooting down MYA17

No way Putin makes a move like that without knowing Obama's opinion

Pootin' is a well respected tough guy. I bet he's willing to put the Russian people through hell just to make his point, and the RW's here in America get to rub one off when they look at his picture ....

These combined U.S. and EU sanctions will take a heavy toll on Russia - no matter how much Putin tries to pretend they don't.

very good Frankie. You don't mind if I call you Frankie do you ?

"Hammered Time" should be the name of this thread.

"Today, Obama drank 10 pints of Heineken and was once again drew a Red Line that was so crooked, that it wrapped around him in a circle. Everyone walked past him and sniggered as he kept continuing to draw his red line in an inward spiraling fashion. Obama was clearly hammered today."

Would rightwing nutters rather have Dick Cheney in charge?

Reminds me how many countries made big bucks by sneaking around the sanctions and embargos placed on Iraq.

I don't think one should underestimate Obama's capacity for vindictiveness. And that's one reason why I was surprised that Kerry expended his own capital in trying to find a way for Netandyahoo to get out of Gaza.

Sanctions never really works on a government that rules the people. It hurts the people of the country more than those in power. So why would the far left be for something like this?

McCain and Graham are the far left?

So far Obama's sanctions have caused Putins's favorable number in Russia to be at 87% approval. Perhaps it will go down to 80% which is twice as good as Obama's numbers.
